The Mandarin House

Place

If you are interested in history and culture, you might want to visit the Mandarin's House in Macau. This is a historic residential complex that belonged to the famous Chinese scholar and reformer Zheng Guanying, who lived in the late Qing dynasty. He wrote his influential book Shengshi Weiyan (Words of Warning in Times of Prosperity) in this house, which inspired many revolutionaries and modernizers in China and abroad.

The Mandarin's House is not just a typical Chinese residence. It is a remarkable example of how Chinese and western cultures blended together in Macau, a former Portuguese colony. The complex has more than 60 rooms, covering an area of 4000 square meters. It has the traditional features of Guangdong architecture, such as courtyards, moon gates, and grey brick walls. But it also has elements of western style, such as arches, columns, and balconies. The house reflects the open-mindedness and vision of Zheng Guanying, who advocated for reforms and modernization in China.

The house was built in 1869 by Zheng's father, Zheng Wenrui, who was a wealthy merchant and a mandarin (a high-ranking official) in Guangdong province. The house was inherited by Zheng Guanying, who lived there with his family until his death in 1921. The house was then occupied by his descendants and tenants until 2001, when the government acquired it for conservation. The restoration work took eight years to complete, and the house was opened to the public in 2010. The house is now a cultural heritage site and a museum that showcases the life and work of Zheng Guanying and his family.

The Mandarin's House is a must-see attraction for anyone who wants to learn more about the history and culture of Macau and China. It is a place where you can appreciate the beauty and diversity of architecture, as well as the wisdom and legacy of a great thinker.
